Unlimited secure and cheap online storage

When was the last time you made a backup of your personal files? Did you burn them on a CD, DVD or did you store them on an external harddrive? Well at least you make backups. But how reliable are these things? Is it safe to keep all these things in one place? What about a fire and how long does a CD last anyway?

These are common problems everyone of us needs to deal with everyday. Is there a perfect solution? No. But at least you could store your data in more than one place. Even better you could store it online. There are many different companies who sell secure online storage. Namely there are Xdrive, box.net, Go Daddy, Streamload and the .Mac storage.

Services like Streamload look perfect with 25 GB of free online storage. But if you take a closer look then you will see that to really use it you would need to buy a subscription. These services are not bad in any way. But they do not scale very well and sometimes you need to pay more than you want.

Recently another contender entered the ring called Jungle Disk. This service is not provided by some unknown company. Amazon is behind all this with their Simple Storage Service (S3). Amazon provides the infrastucture and an interface that developers can build upon. Jungledisk is one of the first applications that makes use of these services. There is no monthly fee required to use their services. You pay for the amount of storage and traffic you use. Since you will probably use it as an online backup storage you do not want to pay for traffic you do not use. They charge you $0.15 per gigabyte-month of storage used and $0.20 per gigabyte of data transferred. It is that simple.

The use is billed through Amazon Digital Services that you already know if you have a regular Amazon account. The Jungledisk software is offered for all three major operating systems. So if you have any crucial data that you need to store in a secure place then you should probably give Jungledisk a try.
